We are currently seeking a motivated Programmer, Operations to be responsible for the specification, purchase, testing, installation, and documentation of welding and automation technology, sensors, electrical switches and die protection equipment used in the “right sized” machinery, dies, weld fixtures and gauges used at the Ariens Company. This individual must be able to work as a team player in a high paced Lean manufacturing environment.



  • Automation/ “Right Sized” Machinery Responsibilities:

Work together with machine design staff, tool and die makers, production personnel, and management to help determine effective automation applications on “in-house” built right sized equipment.  This could include drilling units, welders, benders, brakes, among many other types of machinery.  Duties will also include helping design and build as well as program PLCs, drives, vision systems and other automation equipment to help out in all areas of the factory.  These will include safety devices, transfer devices, stacking equipment, pick and place units, among other requests that we receive.  The automation technician will also help determine costs and feasibility of machine and automation work requests received.  The automation engineering technician will work with vendors and their representatives to determine the correct hardware and software for each individual application.  This will include working with established vendors, as well as developing new sources for this type of technology.

  • Die Related Responsibilities:

Work together with design staff, tool and die makers, quality personnel, and production supervisors to determine the best method in each tool to prevent tool mishaps or the production of defective parts.  The use of sensors of all kinds to help eliminate miss-feeds in coil fed presses, part ejection failure, double part detection, slug removal detection, error-proofing blank placement, and cameras for “in-tool” inspection.  The automation technician will work with die set-up personnel to make sure they are trained on how to set up the tool, and how to program each sensor for successful operation.

  • Fixture Related Responsibilities:

 Work together with tool design staff, tool and die makers, production supervisors, and robot weld technicians to determine the best method in each fixture to prevent the production of defective parts.  These fixtures may be robotic weld, hand weld, machining fixtures, inspection fixtures, among other types.


This includes, but may not be limited to the following:

  • The use of various automation technology to detect part presence, proper part placement, detecting the opening and closing of clamping devices, and quick check gauging fixtures, among other issues.


  • The automation technician will relay all pertinent fixture related information to the tool and die design staff, and work together on correct placement of various hardware into the CAD design, so that the information is passed accurately to the floor for fixture build.


  • Once the tool/fixture is built the automation technician will work closely with the assigned toolmaker and the robot technicians to ensure all automation technology is installed and functioning properly.  Once the fixture is determined to be working as designed, the automation technician will work with the individual machine operators to ensure they are trained and understand how the fixture is to operate.

Job Requirements


  • Two year certificate from college or technical school
  • Five years related experience and/or training; or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Candidate must be willing to do continuing education programs in order to keep abreast with changing technologies



  • Ideal candidate may possess CWI and/or CWE nationally accredited certification
